NIJ Standard 0101.06 is a comprehensive standard for testing the values of ballistic protective armor, as used by law enforcement and military personnel. To qualify under this standard, ballistic weapons, a series of rigorous performance tests to ensure that they meet the expectations.

Ballistic armor is assessed by the level of protection, with higher levels, thus becoming an effective protection against penetration and blunt trauma effect of larger caliber rounds for the purpose of certification was made, a jacket must penetration to prevent the test ball to the test firing speed , and more importantly to prevent distortion caused by blunt trauma to the test surface. Under the NIJ Standard 0101.05 for IIA IIIA by testing a total of six panel samples were needed for testing purposes. Each panel would be a standard format, with six shots per panel and a minimum distance of 2 inches between shots. Two shots (# 4 and # 5 in particular) should be performed in a 30-degree angle from the harness, to a corner impact test. For testing the effects of water on the material, armor was subjected to a spray six minutes before testing. All test images were performed in areas with a minimum of 3 inches from the edge. Four of the ballistic tests to limit tests were conducted to evaluate the resistance to test the penetration, two tests of back-face signature tests were conducted to test for the distortion of a test material (soft clay) behind an impact point, with a maximum deformation depth of 44 mm below. Body armor would not test if it could be better deformations of the test bullets, or the first full test bullet penetrated the ballistic armor.

The NIJ Standard 0101.06 provides more rigorous testing of these requirements. Specifically, 28 samples are required – 22 large samples, and six small samples. Each panel will have six test shots, but the distance is more rigidly defined – by three shots a distributed a minimum of two inches apart, with a minimum distance of 2 inches of edges. Shots from 4 to 6 should be grouped in a circle with a maximum spread of 3.94 inches. Shot 4 is still being tested at an angle of 30 degrees, but shot 5 was tested on a 45 degree angle. Wet testing is performed by completely immersing the shell for 30 minutes. Ballistic limit testing conducted on both the first and the second round by type, with ten tests for each type. Back Face Signature deformation test requires three measured deformations of less than 44 millimeters, with half of a measurement result of more than 40 millimeters, and an outlier allowed. The NIJ Standard 0101.04 requires that the vests are certified to the level of IIA tests passing a 9mm round trips to a relative speed of 1120 meters per second and a .40 caliber round travels at 1055 fps. Level II armor had a 9 mm round at 1205 fps (+ / -30) and a .357 Magnum round trip at 1430 fps to resist. Level IIIA armor was needed for a 9mm round at 1430 fps and a .44 magnum stop round at 1430 fps.

The NIJ Standard 0101.06 increases demand at all levels to be assessed level IIA armor is now at a 9mm round at 1225 fps and a .40 caliber round at 1155 fps. These tests are a party of eight panels (six large and two small) in a rotary drum set at 149 degrees Fahrenheit with 80% relative humidity. This party is cycled for 72,000 cycles of five revolutions per minute over a period of about ten days, then removed and tested against the threat ratings for a reduced test speed (IIA some level testing of 9mm rounds on the 1165 fps and .40 caliber rounds on the 1065 fps after preparation Level II requires the testing of 9mm rounds on the 1245 fps and .357 Magnum rounds after preparation requires testing of Level IIIA .357 SIG rounds on the 1410 fps and .44 Magnum rounds on the 1340 fps after exposure.)

The level of protection they wear is usually based on a need concealability, comfort, and overall protection. A Level II armor is the thinnest and lightest available, and stops the penetration of a majority of the threats, but is less effective against blunt trauma injuries. Level II armor offers a balance between blunt trauma protection against high velocity rounds, costs, and thickness, while remaining concealable. Level III-A armor offers the best protection in soft armor and minimizes blunt trauma injuries to the wearer, making them more responsive to an immediate threat, but is less concealable, heavier and more expensive.
